Overview: This webinar will explore sexual violence at colleges and universities. Various forms of sexual violence will be examined including rape, acquaintance rape, domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Participants will learn appropriate ways of responding to and supporting someone who has been sexually assaulted. In addition, comprehensive prevention strategies to reduce the risk of sexual violence will be reviewed.

Why should you attend: Sexual violence can impact all people, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, race or economic status. But some groups are at a higher risk than others. There has been a recent increase in the numbers of reported sexual assaults on college campuses. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics National Crime Victimization Survey, 6.1 per 1,000 or 0.61 percent of female college students have experienced sexual assault and 1.4 per 1000 or .14 percent of male college students has experienced sexual assault. The 2014 American College Health Assessment found that 7% of college men and women in the last 12 months reported experiencing sexual touching without their consent. 2.9% reported that someone attempted sexual penetration without their consent 1.9% reported sexual penetration without their consent. 1.7% was in a sexually abusive intimate relationship. And 5.1% experienced stalking.

Dr. Peggy Mitchell Clarke is a clinical psychologist, mental health consultant, and retired psychology professor who earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Brown University and her M.Ed. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Virginia. Dr. Clarke worked as a psychotherapist in a wide variety of inpatient and outpatient mental health settings, and served on the Colorado state board of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and as an executive officer for the Virginia and Rocky Mountain chapters of the Association of Black Psychologists. Her experience in higher education includes teaching psychology for 19 years at colleges and universities in Virginia and Colorado and serving as Director of Faculty Professional Development at Community College of Aurora and Associate Director of Career and Counseling Services at Christopher Newport University. She currently serves on the Behavioral Intervention Team at Community College of Aurora and is the President of Living Well Press, LLC, a mental health and wellness consulting firm and publishing company.
