Description :

Overview: This program provides an overview of workplace violence against healthcare providers that includes; the definition of workplace violence. The typography of workplace violence, risk factors for workplace violence, and scope and impact in healthcare settings.

Strategies for recognizing and defusing potential workplace violence incidents, including pre-incident indicators, and aggravating factors, Strategies, tactics and techniques, verbal and non-verbal, for defusing agitated individuals will be provided.

Physical techniques for mitigation of violence, should it occur will be discussed. These techniques and their limitations will be clearly identified as being for use as a last resort when other options have failed or do not exist.

The webinar will include our proprietary "Violence Triangle" model which simplifies understanding and responding to violence. For years fire safety instructors have used the "Fire Triangle" to illustrate a simple, but important concept; for combustion to occur there must be three components, heat, oxygen and fuel. Remove any one and there's no fire. That's all the fire science theory most people will ever need.

The Violence Triangle illustrates the three sides of the triangle with Opportunity, Ability, and Intent. This simplifies the decision-making process, saving time and allowing better decision making. To be safe from violence just eliminate one element, using the strategies, tactics, and techniques provided in this training.

Why should you attend: The Joint Commission's Environment of Care standards require health care facilities to address and maintain a written plan describing how an institution provides for the security of patients, staff and visitors. To be effective, this written plan should include workplace violence safety training. OSHA Guidelines mandate training on the concept of "Universal Precautions for Violence", i.e., that violence should be expected, but can be avoided or mitigated through preparation.

Employees should receive regular training on:
  • Early recognition of escalating behavior or warning signs
  • Ways to prevent volatile situations
  • Responding to violent situations
Training programs should involve all employees, including supervisors and managers. Failure to include appropriate safety training in your workforce violence plans and policies may actually increase the risks they were intended to address.
