This vacancy is open to employees of the University of Nottingham only. 

DeepSeq, our world-class Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) facility at the University of Nottingham, is seeking a highly motivated Technical Manager. Based in the School of Life Sciences, DeepSeq supports a diverse portfolio of service-based research projects from both internal and external as well as international academic and industry clients.

As the Technical Manager, you will oversee the daily technical and operational management of the facility, ensuring the smooth delivery of sequencing projects, maintaining quality standards, and contributing to the strategic development of the platform. This role is ideal for someone with excellent technical experience, a flair for scientific problem-solving, and a passion for supporting high-impact research.

This is a full time, permanent position. 

Key Responsibilities:

Project Management & Planning: Facilitate day-to-day technical coordination of research projects, including project design, tracking, costing, scheduling, and troubleshooting.Client Liaison & Technical Advice: Act as the key point of contact for internal and external clients, providing specialist advice on experimental design and sequencing technologies.Innovation & Development: Identify opportunities to enhance DeepSeq’s capabilities by developing new techniques, collaborating with suppliers, and driving methodological improvements.Facility Operations: Ensure smooth operation and maintenance of complex sequencing equipment and service contracts; monitor budgets and financial reporting.Health & Safety Compliance: Support compliance in all workflows, particularly around the handling and movement of biological materials.Training & Outreach: Collaborate with academic and industry partners to deliver training events and seminars to the University community. 

About You:

Essential:

Proven analytical and technical problem-solving skills.Experience managing scientific or technical projects in a research environment.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Strong organisational abilities and the capability to manage multiple priorities.Technical expertise in molecular biology, genetics, informatics, or a related scientific area.

Desirable:

Experience with next generation sequencing platforms (e.g. Illumina, Oxford Nanopore, PacBio).Familiarity with project budgeting, time planning, and cost analysis.Prior experience contributing to grant applications and research outputs.Additional qualifications related to health and safety or laboratory operations.
