Description :

We are seeking to recruit an experienced and exceptional senior postdoctoral research fellow in ice sheet altimetry. This position will act as the technical lead of the UK Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM) land ice altimetry activities at Lancaster University, and will work to deliver a programme of high impact research.

The primary responsibilities of the post will be (1) to serve as the Lancaster technical lead for the development and implementation of new satellite altimetry processing capability within CPOM’s workflows; (2) to contribute to strategic planning of the group’s future activities, including responsibility for delivering world-leading research and securing sustained ongoing funding; (3) the day-to-day management of CPOM land ice altimetry processing chains and dataset production at Lancaster; and (4) the supervision of more junior CPOM staff and postgraduate students at Lancaster. We are also looking for someone who is motivated to make a positive contribution to wider departmental activities, for example supporting the delivery of undergraduate teaching, where such opportunities arise.

Based at Lancaster University, you will join our dynamic and rapidly-growing group of polar and alpine researchers, who use satellite observations, climate models and field measurements to study the cryosphere. We offer an ambitious, friendly and supportive environment for developing a career in polar and alpine research, and our group includes PhD students, post-doctoral researchers and more senior academics.

CPOM provides the UK with core strategic capability in polar satellite observation, and works in close partnership with the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) to deliver national capability in polar research. CPOM also collaborates closely with the European Space Agency (ESA) on current satellite missions and future design concepts, including CryoSat-2, Sentinel-3 and CRISTAL.

Preferred candidates will have both a PhD and postdoctoral experience in ice sheet altimetry.

The anticipated start date for this post is March 2026.

Closing Date: 11 Jan 2026

Salary: £39,906 to £46,049 (Full time, indefinite with end date)
