Description :

This position is provided by the University of Bath as part of a major project that links membrane researchers at Bath, Manchester, Newcastle, Imperial College, and Edinburgh Universities. The project, entitled “From Membrane Material Synthesis to Fabrication and Function” (SynFabFun), is funded through a prestigious 5-year Programme grant from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

Membranes offer exciting opportunities for more efficient, lower energy, more sustainable industrial gas and liquid separations. However, high performance polymeric, inorganic and ceramic membranes all suffer from problems with decay of performance over time, through relaxation of the membrane material and/or the build-up of other material on the membrane.  The ambitious vision of the SynFabFun project is to create membranes which do not suffer significantly from ageing or fouling over the lifetime of an industrial plant: so called ‘immortal membranes’.

The Research Associate will be involved in the development of methods to fabricate nanostructured hybrid membranes via 3D printing methods. The project will be focused on the design of hybrid membranes for liquid- and gas-based separations, with the goal of obtaining consistent performance over the life-time of the membrane via reduced fouling formation or reduced membrane ageing.

The successul candidate will join the research groups of Prof Mattia and Dr Chew, with 1 Research Associate and 2 PhD students already working on SynFabFun at Bath.

This post is full time and is being offered on a Fixed Term Contract basis of up to 24 months.
