Description :

We are seeking applications for a Senior Research Associate to work on developing novel methodology for modelling spatio-temporal extremes as part of a project entitled Statistical estimation and detection of extreme hotspots, with environmental and ecological applications. You will be part of a wider team of academics, postdocs and PhD students working on an exciting project in collaboration with Dr Jenny Wadsworth and Prof Jonathan Tawn at Lancaster, and partners at KAUST (Saudi Arabia) and INRA Avignon (France). Active collaboration with project partners is expected.

In recent years, much progress has been made in the development of flexible models for spatial or temporal extremes. In reality, environmental phenomena are indexed by space and time, and ideally models should capture both of these features in order to understand the fuller picture of rare but impactful events. You will work on developing such models and undertaking substantive applications to environmental datasets.

You should have, or be about to complete, a PhD in Statistics, Data Science, or related discipline, and have strong programming skills (e.g. in R, Matlab, C++, etc.). Experience with extreme value theory, spatial / spatio-temporal statistics will be an advantage.

The post is available from 1 July 2018 for a maximum of 33 months.
Informal enquires can be addressed to

Dr Jenny Wadsworth (j.wadsworth@lancaster.ac.uk)
Prof Jonathan Tawn (j.tawn@lancaster.ac.uk)

We welcome applications from people in all diversity groups.
