Description :

Integrated photonic chip and instrument platform for low-cost health diagnostics

We are seeking a postdoctoral research fellow to join a multidisciplinary team realising portable, easy-to-use instruments for rapid point-of-care infection diagnostics, centered on state-of the art integrated photonics research. The project is funded by EPSRC’s Healthcare Technologies Programme (http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/R011230/1).

The team, led by scientists and engineers from the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), Chemistry and Medicine at the University of Southampton and at Dstl, will use waveguide-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for the detection of infection and diagnosis of disease, demonstrating application to clinical samples.

Working at the forefront of integrated photonics research, in collaboration with researchers in complementary disciplines, the research fellow will be responsible for developing the chemistry to immobilise antibodies and other biological detection molecules on to the plug-in disposable waveguide structures and for developing the assay protocols for use with the instrument in surgeries, wards and remote communities.

You will be creative, capable, and self-motivated, and have proven scientific ability and excellent experimental and team-work skills. You will collaborate closely with researchers in the Optoelectronics Research Centre, the Faculty of Medicine and at Dstl. A PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in chemistry and in surface chemistry and biosensors/medical diagnostics is required.

This post is for one year in the first instance with a possibility of extension up to three years and excellent opportunities to progress further.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

You are welcome to contact Professor Phil Bartlett by email at pnb@soton.ac.uk for further information.

We aim to be an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community.
