Post-Doctoral Research Assistant in Offshore Wind Energy – Wind Turbine Blade manufacture with Embedded Sensors

The University of Hull is part of a £7.6M EPSRC Prosperity Partnership: A New Partnership in Offshore Wind (www.npow.group.shef.ac.uk). This is an exciting new collaboration between the Universities of Hull, Sheffield and Durham with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (the world’s largest offshore wind turbine manufacturer) and Ørsted (the world’s largest offshore wind farm developer). The aim of this 5-year programme is to address fundamental research to reduce the cost of electricity from offshore wind, and lay the foundation for the next generation of wind turbines and farms at a significantly higher level of power generation. 

As part of this programme, the School of Engineering and Computer Science wishes to appoint a post-doctoral research assistant to work as part of a team on the development of embedded fibre optic sensing systems capable of monitoring the lifetime behaviour of wind turbine blades from manufacture to operation. This will allow improved control of manufacturing processes and allow better prediction of performance and maintenance requirements. The person appointed to this post will develop and evaluate methods of embedding sensors into the blades during manufacture and conduct experimental trials on alternative integration methods.

Candidates should have a PhD in Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering or a related discipline. Experience of composite manufacturing processes would be an advantage.
