Description :

We are inviting applications for a full time Residency position in the Section of Companion Animal Emergency and Critical Care. The Residency Training Programme has been approved by the European College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ECVECC). Clinical duties require flexible working hours that include daytime, evening, night and weekend responsibilities to fulfil the requirements of the ECVECC training programme. The candidate will receive training in all aspects of Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) and will be expected to study for the Postgraduate ECVECC Diploma. The Resident will participate in a number of roles including managing hospitalised critically ill patients and seeing emergency first opinion and referral cases. The Resident is also expected to perform successful rotations in internal medicine, surgery and other non-ECC specialties, to meet the residency training requirements. Residents will be involved in clinical research and will be required to submit for publication manuscripts based on their research work during the programme.

The successful candidate will join three board-certified ECC faculty members to strengthen the team and develop the growing Section of ECC. The ECC team provides education to students during their Bachelor's and Master's programme, conducts clinical and fundamental research and offers care to patients and their owners. The faculty team is supported by an ES manager, highly motivated Emergency Vets (8), Interns ECC (5) and Residents from different specialties rotating through the services. Interaction with colleagues across the range of specialist disciplines will provide further support and stimulation to develop your clinical ECC qualities.

The Department has an 8-cage Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and a 24-hour Emergency Service (ES). Both the ES and ICU are staffed 24 hours a day with licensed veterinary technicians with a passion for excellence in patient care. The ICU is closed style, but collaboration with all other speciality services augments patient care. The ICU is well equipped with two oxygen cages, an isolation ward, a mechanical ventilation station, an out of hours pharmacy and laboratory. The ICU runs its own blood bank. The ICU has a caseload of around 800 patients per year. The ES features point of care laboratory and diagnostic imaging facilities, including ultrasound. The ES staff is supported 24/7 by other specialities. The ES sees around 5,000 small animal emergency cases per year.
