PhD Description:

Allergies to small organic chemicals are a public health concern and can manifest themselves in a variety of clinical outcomes. For example, allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a T-cell mediated, delayed hypersensitivity that typically results in skin symptoms, which can be severe but not life-threatening. By contrast, chemical respiratory and drug allergies can be IgE-mediated and potentially fatal. What drives the subsequent divergent immunological outcomes i.e. the differences in the main effector responses associated with skin and respiratory sensitisation is unknown.

In collaboration with Unilever PLC, this research project capitalises on novel proteomic techniques recently developed at the UoS to characterise both the proteins modified and the MHC peptide antigens presented after sensitiser exposure. This programme of research presents an exciting opportunity to investigate and elucidate the differences in effector responses between skin and respiratory sensitisation at the molecular level. Working within a research team based within the Centre for Proteomic Research, the successful student will develop expertise in using the latest techniques in proteomics, immunopeptidome analysis and bioinformatics.

The project is funded for 3 years and welcomes applicants from the UK and EU who have or expect to obtain at least an upper second class degree in Biological Sciences or allied subjects. Funding will cover fees and an enhanced stipend of £ 17,777 per annum for 2018/19.
