Description :

Are you an experienced geoscientist with a background in interpretation of geological and geophysical datasets from in a variety of subsurface settings? Do you have experience of industrial subsurface seismic and well log datasets, familiarity with handling datasets from both onshore and offshore environments, and evaluation of seismic and related data?Would you like to support the delivery of world-leading research and teaching in geology and geophysics?

As a Teaching and Research Fellow in Geological and Geophysical Data Analysis, you will lead a project to appraise the quality, and categorise the type, of subsurface datasets currently held by the School of Earth and Environment (SEE), in order to create a digital resource. This resource will be easily accessible by geoscience staff and students for a variety of research projects, including undergraduate and postgraduate dissertation topics. You will liaise with industry contacts to ascertain any restrictions on use of these datasets, hence a working knowledge of confidentiality agreements would be advantageous.

SEE is ranked 14th in the World University Rankings by subject and 2nd in the UK for Research Power (REF 2014). In this dynamic environment you will work with staff across the Institute of Applied Geosciences (IAG) and the Institute of Geophysics and Tectonics (IGT), plus their external partners, to enhance our reputation as a centre of excellence for research and teaching in applied geophysics and structural geology. This reputation is underpinned by our sector-leading MSc programmes in Exploration Geophysics and Structural Geology with Geophysics, the former having trained over 850 geophysicists from all over the world since its inception 54 years ago.

We receive industry support for our research and teaching through scholarships, co-supervision of projects (via company-hosted placements and Leeds-based collaborations) and access to high-quality datasets for research. These datasets are a valuable resource, many costing millions of pounds to acquire. Our archive currently contains in excess of 100 datasets, and over 100,000 individual files, a rich research resource that is currently under-used.

Working with the teaching teams delivering our MSc programmes, the Geoscience Software & Data Support Officer and the Directors of IAG and IGT you will review the current subsurface data archive and catalogue it into a practical research resource.
