Description :

The University of Hull is part of a £4M EPSRC funded Supergen Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Hub which brings together 10 UK universities to share skills, resources and expertise across the field of wave, tidal and offshore wind energy. As part of the core research programme we are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to investigate the potential for embedded sensors within offshore wind, wave and tidal devices to support improved lifetime prediction and yield optimisation.

The person appointed will join a large research team and will focus on the development of sensor and signal processing systems to monitor the multi-axis strain and impact on tidal and wind turbine blades during operation. It is anticipated that this will make use of a combination of fibre optic and other sensors with appropriate signal processing and data transmission techniques.

Duties will include the definition of sensing system requirements, selection of appropriate sensing technologies, development of deployment strategies, performance evaluation using physical and mathematical models and assessment of routes to integration into full scale systems.

Candidates should have a MEng/BEng in Electronic Engineering or a related discipline and have PhD level research experience in a relevant subject.

The University of Hull holds the Athena SWAN University Bronze Award in recognition of its commitment to advancing women's careers in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment and offers a number of family-friendly employment practices that are designed to enable a good work-life balance.

The post is available immediately as a full-time position of 36.5 hours per week for 1 year. Alternative working patterns, including part time and job share arrangements, will be considered.
