We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the Institute for Geophysics and Tectonics at the University of Leeds.This role is focused on refining observations of the seismicity associated with the internal deformation of subducting slabs, using a combination of observational earthquake seismology and the statistical assessment of seismic catalogues. This will be complemented by numerical geodynamic modelling to probe the processes controlling the occurrence and distribution of these earthquakes. In particular, the aim of the project is to advance our understanding of the temporal variation and evolution of intraslab seismicity, and how this may relate to time-varying changes in the stress state (most likely driven by the occurrence of large-magnitude earthquakes within the subduction system) and/or the rheology (particularly the release to fluids during slab descent)of the subducting slab. Geographic areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the subduction systems of Central and South America.
We are looking for candidates who are enthusiastic and numerate, with have a PhD (or one close to completion) in an appropriate aspect of solid-Earth geophysics, along with prior experience in either observational seismology or geodynamic modelling.
