The University of Surrey has ambitious plans for our future. The Institute for Communication Systems (ICS) is focused on researching the future of communication systems including mobile and wireless communications, future internet, internet of things, connected transportation, high altitude platform and satellite communications and networking.

We have a long-standing track record of being a major academic research institute in the field within Europe, and historically we have a unique research approach on both satellite as well as terrestrial mobile communication systems.

We are the largest academic research centre in Europe ICT. We’re a major participant in European Union ICT framework of programmes. We have major collaborations with industry and academia in the UK, Europe and the rest of the world.

ICS and the 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) are within the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE). ICS has around 18 FTE academic staff and more than 170 PhD students and postdoctoral research fellows. Research within ICS covers all aspects of Communication Systems.

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering is looking to recruit a world leading Professor of Wireless Communications, to develop and lead a significant programme of research in line with the Faculty’s research strategy, attracting and securing significant research funds.

The successful applicant will provide academic leadership in undergraduate and postgraduate courses within area of expertise and the post holder will be expected to complement our existing strengths in Wireless and Satellite Communications, and have the potential to collaborate extensively with both internal and external partners, including Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd, particularly (but notexclusively) in the areas listed below:

Satellite millimeter-wave communications and co-existence Satellites and The Internet of Things Low Earth orbit mega constellations Large array Antenna design kW solar panel technology Electric ion propulsion In-orbit self-assembly technology
