Applications are invited for a full-time Research Technician to support a range of research studies and trials with a focus on the molecular analysis of cancer and the human immune system. The post will be part of the Innate and Adaptive Immunotherapy Group, led by Professor Christian Ottensmeier, Dr Tilman Sanchez-Elsner and Dr Pandurangan Vijayanand.

The post will be based in the Southampton General Hospital site; the role falls within the remit of the Cancer Sciences Unit in the Faculty of Medicine, which provides a stimulating working environment for more than 100 scientists, clinicians and associated staff, investigating cancer and its treatment. 

The post-holder will have experience of Next Generation Sequencing and use a variety of techniques including RNAseq, qPCR, DNA/RNA extraction, tissue disaggregation, flow cytometry, plus cell sorting. You will also process a range of patient samples for storage, including blood products and tissues, as well as perform fresh or batched analyses within a highly quality controlled system. You will be required to comply with meticulous record keeping and database management for all processes undertaken and, where pertinent, comply with requirements of GCP for laboratories; training will be provided where necessary. We are looking for a highly motivated and proactive individual who is able to work flexibly as part of a team as well as independently. Ideally, you will have research experience in immunological techniques and hold Skill level equivalent to achievement of HNC, A-Level, NVQ3 with proven work experience acquired in relevant technical support roles and job-related training.

You will be able and willing to commit to some out of hours work to facilitate acquisition and processing of human (cancer) tissue samples and for group and collaborator meetings.

You must undergo occupational clearance for the job role; previous occupational clearance for similar job roles will be an advantage.

The appointment is part time (20 hours per week), fixed-term for 1 year in the first instance and is tenable from August 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
