Applications are invited for the post of Studio Technician within the Department of Music and Media. This post is part of a team of technicians who enable teaching and research in the Department of Music & Media. Between them they manage the technical stores for all programmes, undertake installation and repairs to equipment, and enable the day-to-day operation of the University’s professional recording studios used by the Music and Sound Recording (Tonmeister®) programme.

We are seeking a person to fit in to this team, to undertake some of the following range of tasks: manage the booking and loan of the Department’s wide range of audio/visual equipment, including its extensive microphone collection, and portable video and audio recording equipment; manage bookings of the recording studios; provide front-line technical support and advice to staff and students relating to the recording studios and audio equipment; maintain audio equipment; monitor and supervise the collection and loan of audio and video equipment (including a fleet of location-recording vehicles); provide IT support for Department systems; and deliver operational training to students in the use of audio, video and portable appliance testing equipment.

The technical role facilitates all operational aspects of the PATS building and associated technical areas, including three recording studios with Neve, SSL and Studer consoles, five digital editing suites, an ITU-R BS 1116 listening room with installed Genelec 22.2 monitoring system, mobile location recording equipment and an audio and electronics laboratory – more information about these can be found at http://iosr.uk.

The successful candidate will be highly self-motivated with good time management skills, and have: technical knowledge of audio equipment; an ability to undertake technical support activities and repairs; a technical aptitude and working knowledge of digital audio and computer hardware & software; an ability to plan new processes for storage, booking, issuing, and usage monitoring of audio and video equipment; and an ability to train students in practical tasks. The role will involve continued development and training, with ample opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of technical maintenance and operation from highly experienced colleagues.
