The University of Southampton is seeking to appoint a talented Post-Doctoral Research Fellow to work on a project Understanding Recent Fertility Trends in the UK and Improving Methodologies for Fertility Forecasting (Fertility Trends) funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). This is a joint project between the Universities of St Andrews and Southampton, led by Prof. Hill Kulu and Prof. Ann Berrington. The project will examine the significant fluctuations in fertility levels in the UK in the last two decades, will investigate their causes, and will develop improved methodologies for fertility forecasting. 

The primary duties of the post holder will be to prepare data including those from the Office for National Statistics Longitudinal Study (ONS LS), and to undertake analyses of fertility and its drivers using the ONS LS and United Kingdom Household Panel Survey (UKHLS). 

The successful candidate will have a PhD in a quantitative social science discipline (including applied statistics), experience of conducting event history analyses and good communication and management skills are essential.  Experience in handling longitudinal data and an interest in fertility or family demography is desirable. 

Applications for a Research Fellow position will be considered from candidates who are close to completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

The successful candidate will become a member of the Department of Social Statistics & Demography https://www.southampton.ac.uk/demography/  at the University of Southampton, which has an international reputation in Demography, Global Health, Survey Methods and Statistics. They will also become a member of the highly respected Centre for Population change http://www.cpc.ac.uk/ with its dynamic research portfolio.
