Description :

A Research Assistant is sought for an nine months fixed term part-time contract (FTE 0.75) to work on a Nestlé Purina funded project about visuo-cognitive abilities in dogs, starting January 2020 and due to end September 2020. This post will suit candidates interested in animal cognition and behaviour. The successful candidate will work closely alongside an interdisciplinary team comprising of Anjuli Barber, Anna Wilkinson, Kun Guo and Daniel Mills.

The project uses a state-of-the-art technique, eye tracking, to investigate how different dog breeds visually and cognitively experience human facial expressions. The main responsibilities of the research assistant will be collection of perceptual, cognitive, behavioural and physiological data. In addition, candidates will be expected to help to prepare reports including data analysis and be involved in scientific publications arising from this work. The successful candidate will work at the Riseholme Campus under the supervision of Dr. Anjuli Barber.

As this project involves dogs, applicants must be confident in the handling and training of dogs but also need good interpersonal skills, due to the necessity of a successful collaboration with dog owners. Applicants with experience in behavioural analysis, especially bodily and facial expressions, as well as methods for acquisition of physiological data are favoured. A good basic understanding of eye tracker technologies and computer literacy are desirable. We are looking for candidates with research experience commensurate with their stage of career. Applicants must have an excellent knowledge of animal behaviour, good quantitative skills, and experience with animal handling.
