The University offers a unique opportunity for an individual with outstanding research and leadership in Machine Learning for Digital Healthcare to join the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) and the UK Dementia Research Institute (DRI). The successful candidate is expected to build a research project portfolio focused on machine learning for dementia care to complement existing CVSSP strengths.  

CVSSP is one of the primary centres for AI and Audio-Visual Machine Perception research in Europe with over 150 researchers, a grant portfolio of £24M and a track-record of pioneering research leading to technology transfer in collaboration with UK industry. The centre is currently ranked 1st in the UK, 2nd in Europe and 11th in the world for computer vision machine learning research (csrankings.org). CVSSP collaborates closely with the Surrey Sleep Research Centre (SSRC), the Department of Mathematics, and research teams at Imperial College London. 

The UK DRI is a joint £290 million investment from the Medical Research Council (MRC), Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK. The DRI Care Research & Technology Centre has recently been awarded to Imperial College London & The University of Surrey. The DRI was established in response to the Government’s 2020 Challenge on Dementia. Its mission is to find new ways to diagnose, treat, prevent and care for people living with dementia. The UK DRI combines world-leading expertise across the spectrum of dementia research. 

This permanent post is funded by the University of Surrey and the UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) Care Research & Technology Centre (CR&T), which is a collaboration between Imperial College London and the University of Surrey. Related to this post the University of Surrey has been awarded £5M by the UK DRI, and £1.2M for equipment by EPSRC, to support research in sensor networks to understand the movement and behaviour of people for healthcare in the community and at home.  You will be part of CVSSP’s leading Machine Learning research in association with the DRI-CR&T and Surrey Sleep Research Centre to advance healthcare for people living with dementia.
