The University of Leeds is one of the UK’s largest, most prestigious, and diverse research-intensive universities. We are a member of the Russell Group, included in the world’s top 100 universities in the QS rankings, and named University of the Year by the Times and Sunday Times in 2017. With an annual turnover of £792 million, more than 38,000 students and 8,700 staff, we are continuing to make significant investments in research and innovation, student education, and extending our international reach.

Excellent research is at the heart of our institution. We were ranked 9th in the UK in the 2014 research assessment exercise for the impact of its research, and two more of our professors were elected as Fellows of the Royal Society this year. We are active members of the main national institutes including the Alan Turing, Rosalind Franklin and Henry Royce Institutes, with leading nationally funded doctoral training centres, and an outstanding track record of success in both the Global Challenge Research Fund and the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund. We are at the forefront of research across a breadth of disciplines, from data science through to climate change, and we are committed to playing a key role in tackling global challenges.

Our Nexus Innovation Centre is core to our integrated approach to enterprise, promoting creativity, innovation and impact in the University and across the Region. We provide businesses with links to our globally recognised research expertise, and incubation facilities for high potential start ups. We have a longstanding focus on transforming our academic research into commercial impact, and our Centre for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship is the focal point for enterprise education and research on campus.

Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor, and as a member of the University Executive Group, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Innovation will play a key role in the leadership of the University. Working across the institution, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor will provide inspirational direction of the research and innovation strategy, lead the relevant academic, professional services and support staff to deliver an ambitious and impactful agenda, and promote a vibrant PhD and post-Doctoral community.
