Skin Health Research, University of Southampton

In 2011, the University of Southampton established a new research theme, Skin Health, to complement the existing area of Incontinence Technology, led by Professor Mandy Fader. This timely development coincided with an increased awareness worldwide of the consequences of compromised skin health, in developing Pressure Ulcers and Diabetic Foot ulcers, which represent both Patient Safety and Quality of Care indicators. Professor Dan Bader was appointed within a newly established Clinical Academic Facility at Southampton General Hospital, which incorporated a state-of-the-art research environment and laboratory facilities, including a biological Class 2 lab. The team also have a dedicated space in the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility for human volunteer and patient studies at the hospital site.

Over the last 8 years, Bader has developed an internationally recognised multidisciplinary research group, with colleagues incorporating a range of scientific and clinical expertise including a lecturer in Rehabilitative Bioengineering (Worsley) and Part Time Professor of Implementation Science (Schoonhoven), supported by postdoctoral researchers, PhD students and clinical academic researchers. Our multiscale approach has ranged from cell and skin models to human studies, involving structural biomechanical, biochemical and physiological monitoring techniques. The reputation of the group has been demonstrated in securing successful funding from a range of agencies including UKRIs (EPSRC, MRC), NIHR and EU. In addition, the nature of their research has enabled the development of strong industrial collaborations, with companies both in the UK and overseas, co-developing medical devices, which interface with the skin e.g. support surfaces, incontinence devices and prosthetics. The results of this research has been widely disseminated (56 peer-reviewed publications 2016-2019) and their impact demonstrated in a Case study for submission to UK REF 2021. Since 2019, the Group is part of an EU Innovative Training Network “STINTS” with key international academic and industrial partners, supporting continued success in research, enterprise and education activities.

The successful candidate must have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in nursing sciences, biological sciences or a bioengineering related field. The new appointment would be required to provide academic skills and expertise to complement this research excellence, with grant awards, peer reviewed international publications and impact activities. Success would involve developing pioneering advances in skin and soft tissue health science and clinical practice, targeting priority areas such as pressure ulcer prevention to help shape the future of healthcare delivery. As a balanced portfolio academic, you will be expected to demonstrate experience and enthusiasm in teaching and provide innovation to its delivery in our core areas of nursing sciences, biological sciences or bioengineering. You will also take on administrative roles and prove a collegiate member of the University.

Please note, a standard DBS check will be required for this role.
