Description :

A postdoctoral scientist position is available in Dr Hans Michael Haitchi’s group in Respiratory Research, Clinical & Experimental Sciences (CES), Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton (UoS). The group is studying the impact of maternal allergic asthma during pregnancy on asthma related mediators including ADAM33 in biologic samples collected during caesarean sections using multiomic approaches (proteomics and RNA-Seq). This is part of the Maternal Environment in Pregnancy (MEP) study in collaboration with Dr Matthew Coleman, an obstetrician at University Hospital Southampton.

Dr Haitchi’s group studies asthma and in particular the role of the asthma gene ADAM33 and influence of the maternal environment on the early origin of lung disease using in vivo and in vitro asthma research models.

The post will be full time for 12 months, funded by a BMA Foundation for Medical Research The James Trust grant 2019, awarded to Drs Haitchi and Coleman in collaboration with Jeff Whitsett and Assem Ziady from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, USA and Rob Ewing from Proteomics and Systems Biology, UoS.

Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent qualifications and experience. A strong background in respiratory research with experience in molecular biology, microscopy and image analysis is essential. We especially welcome applications from enthusiastic candidates with prior knowledge of the effect of the maternal environment on respiratory disease development in human and/or mouse models, proteomics and RNA-Seq analysis and with a keen interest and willingness to learn bioinformatics.

We offer an exciting and stimulating work environment with local and international scientific collaborations. The respiratory research group in CES and the Southampton NIHR-Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) conducts world-class research spanning basic sciences and clinical research for asthma and other lung diseases. The position will be based in the Roger Brooke laboratory.

Besides a great research environment, Southampton and its surroundings provide a beautiful place to live.
