This is an exciting opportunity to work on an industrially funded research project based in the University of Southampton Electrochemistry Research Group to work with Professor Andrea Russell and Dr Guy Denault. The project sponsor, City Technology, is a world leader in the design, development and manufacture of electrochemical gas sensors. Electrochemical sensors for gases such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulphide are widely used commercially in many life-safety critical situations. Together, City Technology and the University of Southampton are engaged in programmes to develop novel diagnostic techniques to enhance the performance of electrochemical gas sensors with the aim to deliver revolutionary features for City Technology’s customers in safety critical applications. 

To be successful you will have an NVQ2, GCSE or City and Guilds ideally in Chemistry (or a closely related discipline such as electrochemistry).  You will work alongside research staff assigned to the project to conduct experiments and analyse the results from electrochemical studies of porous gas diffusion electrodes used in electrochemical gas sensors. You will be based predominantly in Southampton in the School of Chemistry, working alongside other technical staff, PhD students, and Research staff in Prof. Russell and Dr. Denuault’s groups. You will also spend time at City Technology’s laboratories in Portsmouth and Poole. 

Experience in practical electrochemistry including cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy , are highly desirable. Excellent written and spoken communication skills and organisational skills are essential.

The position is available for 12 months from 1st August 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter. This position may suit candidates expected to graduate in Summer 2020 considering an industrial placement.
