Senior Research Associate: Solid-State NMR Characterisation of Lithium-ion Battery Cathode Materials (A3055)

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral senior research associate to work in the group of Dr John Griffin in the Department of Chemistry at Lancaster University. The appointee will use solid-state NMR to characterise structure, disorder and lithiation mechanisms in lithium-ion battery cathode materials. A key aim of the research will be to understand what structural properties contribute to the capacity and rate performance and to use this knowledge to design materials with improved properties.

You will be required to carry out advanced solid-state NMR experiments on cathode materials and battery electrodes using a combination of both in situ measurements and ex situ multidimensional correlation experiments. The position is funded by an ISCF Faraday Battery Challenge - Faraday Institution Phase Two project, entitled FutureCat. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with other partners from the FutureCat consortium, and so the appointee may also be required to travel to carry out work or training with other research groups where necessary.

This position is available from 1st October 2020. The initial position is available until March 2021, with an expectation that this will extend until September 2023.

You will have a PhD degree (or about to be awarded a PhD) in Chemistry or relevant subject. Expertise in solid-state NMR is highly desirable. Expertise in any of the following is also desirable: battery materials synthesis; battery assembly and testing; first principles calculations; powder X-ray diffraction measurements and interpretation. You will work in a highly multidisciplinary collaborative team, and have effective written and verbal communication skills in English.
