We are seeking a 0.5FTE postdoctoral research associate to support the Sectarianism, Proxies and De-Sectarianization Project (www.sepad.org.uk) based in the Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion in its ongoing activities at Lancaster University.  The post is funded by Carnegie Corporation

Reporting to Professor Simon Mabon, the post holder will be responsible for contributing to project activities and outputs in the form of publications, workshops, and knowledge exchange around questions of sectarianism in the contemporary Middle East. Although open to applications from broad areas, we are particularly interested in exploring the following topics: 

Sectarian politics in Syria, Kuwait, Yemen

De-sectarianization

The interplay between regional and domestic politics

Transnational movements in the Middle East

Sectarianism and consociationalism

You should hold, or be close to completion (i.e. submission of a thesis) of a PhD in the Social Sciences with a focus on the Middle East. We welcome applications from disciplines including (but not limited to) International Politics/Relations; Middle East Studies; Geography, Anthropology; Sociology; Politics; Urban Studies; Religious Studies. You should have experience in some of the following research methodologies: policy analysis, surveys; social media and internet research; interviewing. 

You will join us on an indefinite contract however, the role remains contingent on external funding which, at this time is due to come to an end on 30 June 2022

You will be joining a world leading research project based at Lancaster University, The Times and The Sunday Times International University of the Year and ranked in the top 10 three main league tables, with a TEF Gold rating for teaching.
