Description :

Shrinking worlds? Young women’s experiences of loneliness in an age of austerity

A fully funded studentship awarded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP) commencing in 2021/22 Academic Year.

In 2018 the UK government launched the first strategy for tackling loneliness, arguing that connected communities are healthier communities. This strategy has been criticized for the way in which it depoliticizes loneliness, and for failing to fully consider the structural conditions that can both produce and exacerbate experiences of loneliness. This in-depth ethnographic research will focus on the experiences of marginalized young women living in poverty in the UK, and their everyday experiences of loneliness. How does economic insecurity produce and intensify young women’s experiences of loneliness? In what ways is loneliness a feminist issue?
