Description :

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge?  Do you have an established background in seismology, geophysics and an interest in applying your skills to understand the dynamics and structure of the Earth’s mantle?  Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research intensive universities?

We are seeking a Research Fellow to fulfil a key role in our project to understand how the Earth’s mantle has evolved over the last billion years, by providing seismic constraints on mantle structures at the 100 km-scale through seismic observation and modelling.  You will be based in the Deep Earth Research Group within the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds and work closely with Dr Andy Nowacki, and with Dr Andrew Walker in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford.  You will be part of a large interdisciplinary team and will collaborate closely with partners at Cardiff University (led by Prof Huw Davies) and the University of Bristol (led by Prof James Wookey).  This work is funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) large grant “Mantle Circulation Constrained” led by Cardiff University.

You will use seismic arrays to make new observations of multipathing (the creation of more than one arrival due to complex structure) in teleseismic waves covering the globe, processing these using automated analysis methods.  You will take models of mantle convection provided by our partners and determine the isotropic and anisotropic velocity structure they predict using the simulation of rock texture development.  You will then simulate seismic observations from these new seismic models using state-of-the-art finite-frequency seismic modelling, and compare the real and synthetic data to determine which mantle models best represent reality.  You will then work with collaborators across the project to use this comparison to suggest improvements to mantle convection models and thereby further our understanding of mantle dynamics in the past.

You will have a PhD, or be near to completing a PhD, in geophysics, physics, applied mathematics or a similar discipline with a strong background in seismology or mantle dynamics. You will also have the ability to conduct independent research and evidence of peer-reviewed publications in international journals. In addition, you will have excellent communication, planning, and team working skills.
