Part-time Research Associate/Fellow ‘Chemists to the Nation, Pharmacy to the World’: Exploring the Global Dimensions of British Healthcare and Beauty with Boots the Chemists, 1919-1980’.

Applications are sought for a part time research fellow to assist and support Dr Anna Greenwood and Dr Richard Hornsey to set up their recently awarded AHRC standard grant ‘Chemists to the Nation, Pharmacy to the World’: Exploring the Global Dimensions of British Healthcare and Beauty with Boots the Chemists, 1919-1980’. The successful candidate will also be expected to work in close collaboration with the project’s designated Research Associate/Fellow, who for the first six months of the project, will temporarily reduce their full-time hours to part time. 

The role will suit a candidate with a doctorate (or one submitted pending viva) ideally in one of the following historical research areas, broadly defined: history of health, well-being, beauty,pharmacy, fashion, retail, or consumerism. Candidates working in social and cultural history more broadly will also be considered. Ideally candidates will be modern-focused historians (twentieth century), who also have an eye on the role local developmentsmay have in global networks of exchange and influence. A key component of the job will be undertaking archival research at the Boots Archive, so the ability to regularly access this venue in Nottingham is imperative. Travel to other UK archives may also berequired. Duties will include literature searches, archival data collection, the co-development of a website (alongside the other Postdoctoral Fellow), and input into the planning of the project’s vibrant engagement programme.

This post will be offered on a fixed term 5 months contract, part time (0.4 FTE, equivalent to c. 2 days a week). Expected start date 1 November 2021.
