Description :

Lancaster University's Ultralow Temperature Physics research group invites applications for a Post-doctoral Research Associate. The role is being offered as research associate (grade 6) or senior research associate (grade 7) depending on the skills and experience of the preferred candidate.

The role will involve working with members of the group to study superfluid helium-3 experimentally. A research programme will be constructed to make maximal use of the candidate’s strengths, with examples of possible focus areas being homogeneous phase transitions and their cosmological implications, building a dark matter detector, trying to melt a time crystal, and investigating the two-dimensional microstructure of three-dimensional 3He superfluidity.

The role holder will have access to world-class facilities which include: the cooling machines, infrastructure, instrumentation and technical support of the Ultralow Temperature group; state-of-the-art nanofabrication facilities in the Quantum Technology Centre cleanrooms; and IsoLab, a new ultra-quiet controlled environment laboratory.

The successful candidate will hold (or soon hold) a PhD in experimental condensed matter physics or a related discipline, with a strong background in studying macroscopic quantum systems.

You will join the team on an indefinite contract. However, the role is related to a specific project lasting 18 months, beyond which extension is subject to the availability of external funding.
