About us

The Ion Beam Centre (IBC) at the University of Surrey is a national facility supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). We have an international reputation in the fields of ion beam applications for materials modification and analysis and house three accelerators for ion beam analysis, ion implantation and ion irradiation purposes. 

About the Role

Within the IBC, you will be responsible for the critical operation and maintenance of our advanced ion implanters, upholding the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and performance. You will play a key role in supporting innovative research across diverse disciplines, contributing to the University's mission of scientific excellence.

Responsibilities

Master the operation and maintenance of a range of sophisticated ion implanters, ensuring optimal performance and uptime.Collaborate with internal stakeholders to design and implement modifications to enhance experimental capabilities.Provide expert guidance and training to research assistants, PhD students, and researchers on the safe and effective utilization of the accelerators.Identify and troubleshoot operational issues promptly, employing your technical expertise to devise effective solutions.Maintain accurate records and inventories of equipment and spare parts.Adhere to all relevant safety regulations and University policies, contributing to a positive and secure working environment.

About you

Hold a minimum of an HND, Degree, or equivalent qualification in Electronics, Instrumentation, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering.Possess demonstrably strong experience in operating and maintaining complex scientific equipment. (We offer comprehensive training for the role.)Demonstrate a thorough understanding of chemical and/or electrical equipment safety regulations.Have excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, coupled with a keen attention to detail.Exhibit a collaborative and supportive approach to teamwork and communication.

Additional desirable skills:

Experience working in a cleanroom environment.Knowledge of vacuum systems and radiation regulations.
