Description :

We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated and capable postdoctoral researcher to join the cancer immunoprevention laboratory led by Dr Matthew Rose-Zerilli at the University of Southampton. The successful candidate will join the multidisciplinary Innovation for Translation Research Group in the Faculty of Medicine, composed of both basic scientists and clinicians, providing a rich environment for exciting professional and personal development.

Supported by the research charity Cancer Research UK and our local Centre for Cancer Immunology Talent Fund. This translational research project will integrate single cell transcriptomic approaches with cellular biology, immunology and 3D tissue mucosoid modelling to understand how the activity of human eosinophils can be harnessed for cancer immunoprevention.

The post holder will work on a collaborative project (including collaborators from Clinical and Experimental Sciences, UHS and Oxford University) seeking to understand the molecular mechanisms underpinning the negative association between eosinophilia and malignant transformation in the distal oesophagus. The post will be funded until 30/04/2026 in the first instance.

Candidates should have a PhD in a relevant area and a BSc/MSc in a related life science subject (e.g. cell biology/ immunology). A background or strong interest in innate immunity and tumorigenesis is would be beneficial.

The candidate will have robust skills in molecular biology techniques as well as experience in innate immune cell culture, primary tissue explants, flow cytometry and 3D cell culture/ organoid techniques. Experience with confocal microscopy and using the programming language R is desirable. Training will be provided in droplet-based single-cell transcriptomics. The candidate must have excellent organisational, communication and problem-solving skills. Evidence of a successful track-record in research and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team is required.
