Applications are invited for a Senior Postdoctoral Research Associate at Lancaster University to work on the NERC-funded SISLAC (“Sources and Impacts of Short-Lived Anthropogenic Chlorine”) project.

The 2.5 year post will involve the development and application of a chemistry-climate model (UKCA) to examine the impact of chlorinated very short-lived substances (VSLS) on atmospheric composition. The atmospheric abundance of certain anthropogenic VSLS, such as dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), is increasingly rapidly. The successful candidate will implement a treatment of CH2Cl2 (emissions and atmospheric chemistry) and related VSLS into the UKCA model, and then evaluate the model against a range of observations. Simulations will be performed to quantify the impact of VSLS on tropospheric and stratospheric composition now and in the future, including the impact of continued VSLS growth on ozone layer recovery and the subsequent climate impacts.

You should have (or be about to complete) a Ph.D. in atmospheric science – preferably with an element of atmospheric chemistry – or a related quantitative discipline. You should have experience in developing and/or running numerical models, and in complex data analysis. Experience using chemistry-climate models and model evaluation against observational datasets would be an advantage.

You should be able to demonstrate independence, good communication skills and a willingness to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment. You will be expected to present results at national and international meetings and to write up results for publication in leading scientific journals.

This is a fixed term, full time post for 2.5 years starting in October 2017 or at a mutually agreed date.
