Description :

The Engineering Department at Lancaster University wishes to appoint a full-time, permanent lectureship in mechanical engineering. We are seeking a visionary candidate, with strong motivation and the ambition to lead new research themes in mechanical design and manufacturing, preferably in aerospace or automotive engineering.

You should have a PhD in a relevant research field, an outstanding publication record and a strong willingness to be a research leader and teach at the highest levels of quality.  Evidence of an ability to attract external grant income to support your research is highly desirable.

The Department of Engineering is a General Engineering Department of recognised excellence in research and teaching, with a clear growth strategy. Engineering research was placed 7th in the Times Higher Research intensity league table and rated as world leading in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF). Mechanical Engineering was rated 3rd in the Guardian University League Table.

Engineering has strong links with industry through the Lancaster Product Development Unit (LPDU) in key areas of excellence such as additive manufacturing, composite materials, computational mechanics and micro-fabrication, with applications in renewable energy, nuclear, electronics and particle accelerator engineering.

Engineering is a strategically important area of investment for Lancaster University. An award-winning £13 million new Engineering building was opened in 2015, providing a new, state-of-the-art, world-class environment for teaching and research. The University is also establishing a new Materials Science Institute (http://www.lancaster.ac.uk/materials-science-institute/), with the aim of conceiving cutting-edge materials to open innovative routes in design and manufacturing.

Lancaster University is campus-based, and is situated adjacent to the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), and proximate to another AONB and two National Parks in the north-west of England. Lancaster is one hour from international airports. The town and the region are home to a variety of excellent schools and enjoy excellent public transport and national rail links. A wide selection of facilities is available on campus including a large variety of social facilities, eateries, a new sports centre, and a highly regarded pre-school centre.  A wide range of benefits is available for staff.

We are committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies on an individual basis, as well as the Athena SWAN Charter, which recognises and celebrates good employment practice undertaken to address gender equality in higher education and research.

For informal enquiries please contact Professor Claudio Paoloni c.paoloni@lancaster.ac.uk or Dr. Sarah Green s.green@lancaster.ac.uk in the first instance. For information about the Engineering Department please visit http://www.lancaster.ac.uk/engineering/.
