Description :

Do you want to join a national science and technology Research Centre and make a real difference to its future? Do you have skills and experience in the development and implementation of business and financial plans? Are you a professionally qualified accountant or qualified by equivalent substantial experience?

The National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) is one of the Natural Environment Research Council's (NERC) research centres with the remit of providing NERC and the UK with National Capability (defined by NERC as large research infrastructure, research services and long term science programmes) in atmospheric science. NCAS is a recognised leader in this field with international reputations across a spectrum of environmental science including climate change, atmospheric physics (including weather), chemistry (including air quality) and atmospheric technology (including observations and modelling). The NCAS role for NERC is identical to that of NERC's other five research centres (BAS, BGS, CEH, NOC and NCEO).

As a member of the NCAS management team, you will be the national senior finance professional, responsible for managing a large and complex portfolio. Furthermore, you will play a significant role in developing and delivering key elements of the Centre’s strategy, and will make a major contribution to key operational projects. You will have responsibility for all aspects of financial and contract management, implementation and reporting, and research grant management in NCAS.

NCAS has an annual turnover of approximately £19M from a core NERC contract and a further £14m from competitively won research grants and contracts. NCAS staff are widely distributed across the UK, resident in ca.12 UK universities, and more are based at its facilities: CEDA (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Oxford) and FAAM (Cranfield). There are over 200 staff in total. The role is predominantly Leeds-based, and visiting other NCAS sites on a regular basis will be essential.
