Applications are invited for the above post at the University of Nottingham, based initially in the University Park – the CfAM is scheduled to move to the new Institute for Advanced Manufacturing Building at Jubilee Park late 2017. The Centre for Additive Manufacturing is a large interdisciplinary group working solely in the area of Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing. Comprising of around 100 academics, post-doctoral researchers and PhD students it is one of the largest centres for additive manufacturing and 3D printing worldwide. The centre engages with a broad range of academics from across the UK and a significant number of industrial partners to deliver on an industrially prioritised research agenda. At any one time the group has multiple on-going research activities across a number of different UK institutions, which are undertaken collaboratively and which employ contract research staff and students.

A position is available for a research associate/fellow to work on a project looking at the processing of polymers by a novel powder based Additive Manufacturing system. The project is funded by EPSRCin collaboration with the National Science Foundation in the USA (NSF) and involves a partnership with the University of Texas, Austin, USA. The successful candidate will be develop a machine for the processing of novel polymer compositions, optimising processing conditions and increasing understanding of material-processing-property relationships.

Candidates must have previous experience in either mechatronics, inkjet printing and processing (by conventional methods) of polymers, or Additive Manufacturing (preferably powder bed fusion or binder jetting).

Candidates must hold a good honours degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or other relevant engineering or science subject, and a PhD or equivalent in Engineering, Physical Sciences or equivalent experience. They should have excellent technical, mathematical and data analysis skills and inter-personal and communication skills - both written and oral. Further requirements are excellent team-working skills and excellent research paper or report writing skills. Candidates must be highly-motivated with the ability to set and meet deadlines appropriate to the progress of the project. Further, experience of project planning within a research or development environment and experience of conducting original research that has been published in high quality journals is required, as is experience of presenting work at international conferences and to industry.

This full-time post is available immediately and will be offered on an 18 month fixed-term contract with the possibility of extension.
