Description :

The Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster University seeks to appoint two Senior Research Associates to work full time for 5 years in the ESRC Research Centre for Corpus Approaches to Social Science. The Centre, which was founded in 2013 and awarded a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Further and Higher Education in 2015, has obtained funding for a further 5 years from April 2018 to March 2023. This funding will enable the Centre to extend the facilitative and transformative power of corpus methods to urgently needed research into health(care) communication.

You will have a PhD in Linguistics or a related area, a track-record of conference presentations and publications commensurate with your career stage, and experience both in the linguistic study of health(care) communication and in the use of corpus methods in the analysis of language and texts. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team that includes academics from the Departments of Linguistics & English Language, Politics, Philosophy & Religion, History, Psychology, and the Institute for Health Research.

You will conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses on a range of different types of corpus data relating to health(care) (including mental health, obesity, chronic pain and language assessment for the healthcare profession), and present the results of the analyses to both academic and non-academic audiences through different media.

You must also include a cover letter/statement in support of your application (maximum 500 words), including your rationale for applying for this post and how your research fits with the aims and objectives of the Centre to which this post is attached.

These are full-time fixed-term posts commencing 1 April 2018 for a period of 5 years.

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Elena Semino, Principal Investigator. Email: e.semino@lancaster.ac.uk

We welcome applications from people in all diversity groups.
