Research Fellow (972718EH)

We are seeking experienced and motivated post-doctoral researcher in the field of high power lasers/hollow core fibres, to work on the development and use of state-of-the-art hollow core fibres for high power laser delivery and light generation applications. The research will look to exploit the ultralow nonlinearity, largely material independent chromatic dispersion, broadband guidance characteristics and the option of filling these materials with different gases, provided by guiding light in a hollow fibre waveguide. The project is backed by substantial UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funding (The AirGuide Photonics Programme Grant) and will involve significant interaction with an array of industrial collaborators. The successful candidate will join a team of around 20 researchers focussing on the field of hollow core fibres, based at the Optoelectronics Research Centre, University of Southampton, UK.

The applicant must have a strong background in photonics, preferably in high power, short pulse lasers and their applications. Experience and knowledge of both fibre and laser beam characterisation would also be highly desirable.

The applicant must also have a background in laboratory experimentation with critical evaluation and interpretation of data. It is expected that applicant will hold a PhD* or equivalent qualification related to fibre optics or photonics more broadly.

The post will be for 2 years in duration, with good prospects for further extension depending on performance.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
