Description :

We are looking to appoint a highly motivated and ambitious Research Fellow in the area of functional inorganic coatings to work on industry-led projects arising from the partnership between Southampton chemistry and the Knowledge Centre for Materials Chemistry (KCMC). This is primarily an industry-facing role that will allow us to respond quickly and flexibly to the requirements of our industrial partners across a range of sectors where inorganic coatings can find application (e.g. energy, photocatalysis, electronics).

The University of Southampton, is an institution in the top one per cent of world universities* and one of the UK’s top 15 research-intensive universities with an international reputation for research, teaching and enterprise activities. * QS World University Rankings 2012-13

Southampton is one of the best places in the UK for chemistry teaching and research. Chemistry at Southampton has a national and international reputation for excellence. The Faculty of Physical Sciences and Engineering boasts world-leading facilities, teaching and research in Electronics and Computer Science, Optoelectronics, and Physics and Astronomy. It has 1,300 undergraduate, 300 taught and 500 research postgraduate students, as well as around 150 academic and 200 research staff members.

The objective of KCMC is to connect the academics in the 6 partner universities with industry, facilitate discussion to identify and match industry needs with potential academic solutions, and delivering on collaboration. KCMC is hosted by the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) which gives access to a wide range of technical expertise and facilities enabling assessment and scale up of technical solutions and new technology.

This post is suitable for chemists, materials scientists or those working in a closely-related discipline with a strong background and broad experience in deposition and characterisation techniques relevant to thin films, who have or may be looking to gain experience working with industrial partners. The appointed project scientist will also work closely with CPI to build new strategic and technological links with Southampton chemistry in inkjet printing technology for materials.
