Description :

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge?Do you have a background in Economics, Psychology or a related discipline?Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research intensive Universities?

This position is being funded under the grant “IKnowFood, which forms part of the UK cross government programme on food security research, Global Food Security. We are seeking a research fellow to work on this project. Your role will be to examine the multiple facets of farmer decision making taking account of both pecuniary and non-pecuniary considerations (e.g. peer group influences (social norms), risk aversion, lifestyle, status quo bias etc.). This work will involve interacting with other members of the project team concerned with developing and testing learning processes that enable knowledge “co-creation” between farmers, scientists, and engineers to generate innovations built on farmers’ knowledge, skills and interests. Building on this knowledge base, your own role will be toinvestigate how best we can encourage (or nudge farmers towards) the adoption of efficiency-enhancing technologies, as well as to more generally gain additional insights regarding farmers’ perceptions of the risks and benefits of particular types of innovations.

It is anticipated that this work will draw heavily on insights from behavioural economics and/or psychology in identifying ways we can overcome various barriers towards the uptake of efficiency-enhancing farm innovations. As part of this work, you will have the opportunity to lead the development of survey work with farmers (randomised control trials) and potentially other methods of data collection such as field trials. You will also have the opportunity to work on a number of high-impact journal papers and reports with other members of the project team based at the University of Leeds and the University of York. It is also expected that you will take an active role in dissemination and interaction with key stakeholders and advisors.
