Description :

Bring your experience of working with Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) to develop your research career in our Business School, with its excellent and deserved reputation for the impact of its research in business and management.

Current research and practice on Open Innovation has not given emphasis on the ability of SMEs to develop and implement Open Innovation strategies while the lessons learned from large firms are not readily transferable to their context. The INSPIRE project (http://www.inspire-smes.eu) investigates how Open Innovation is managed and organised in SMEs in order to leverage and expand the existing scattered initiatives and professionalize their services. The project seeks to understand in depth good practices of Open Innovation in SMEs across Europe, including the barriers they experience, the critical success factors and the open innovation ‘pathways’ they follow.   INSPIRE is carried out by a consortium of 9 organisations which includes four academic institutions, three public intermediaries and two private intermediaries (http://www.inspire-smes.eu/team.php) working with SMEs on Open Innovation.

The understanding of good practices will inform the design, development and validation of an Integrated Toolbox for Open Innovation in SMEs to enable the professional management of Open Innovation by SMEs. The Toolbox will include good practices, indicators and management modules to support the internal innovation activities of an SME and their interaction with Open Innovation partners. The Integrated Toolbox will be developed as a web platform and it will be validated through a series of pilots in real life Open Innovation projects carried out by SMEs across Europe. The project also plans to initiate an EU-wide strategic engagement of innovation stakeholders and spread the practices of Open Innovation.

You will expected to be involved in developing, planning and managing project activities in consultation with the Principal Investigator and in co-operation with the other members of the team.  Developing a publication record, contributing to fund-raising activities for Research and Enterprise and supervising less experienced researchers also forms part of the role.  You may also be expected to contribute to teaching and/or consultancy activities in order to ensure continuous development of knowledge in the subject area.

Research primarily relies on qualitative research and case studies and therefore you will require up-to-date specialist knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques and a PhD in a relevant area.  A good knowledge of the practical challenges faced by SMEs is also key to this role, as is experience of supporting SMEs.

The role is fixed term for six months.  For further information about the role please take a look at the job description, while information on the benefit of working at the university can be found here working-with-us.
