Description :

Are you looking to apply your skills in Structural Biology and Imaging to gain a new molecular understanding of the structure of amyloid aggregates and how they disrupt cells and help to develop new routes to combat amyloid diseases?

We are looking for an outstanding postdoctoral research fellow to join a Wellcome Trust-funded team that will investigate how proteins aggregate into amyloid fibrils and how these aggregates perturb cells. Ultimately the team will involve four post-doctoral researchers and will combine chemical biology, biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, cell biology, and experiments in C. elegans to define the mechanisms underlying amyloid aggregate formation and the consequences of aggregation on cellular function.

You will use cryo-electron microscopy and cryo-electron tomography to investigate the structure of amyloid fibrils, how amyloid aggregates interact with cellular components and membranes, and the effects of newly discovered small molecules and protein aptamers on these interactions.

You will be based in the laboratories of Professors Sheena Radford and Neil Ranson, and work closely with our collaborators Drs Eric Hewitt and Patricija van Oosten-Hawle, and other members of the amyloid team. You should have a PhD (or be close to completion) in Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Imaging or a related discipline andhave extensive experience of using structural or imaging methods to elucidate biological mechanisms. Experience in cryo-electron microscopy/tomography would be a significant advantage, but training will be given to outstanding structural biologists lacking this experience but able to evidence their passion and commitment to learn cryo-EM techniques.
