HEAD OF SCHOOL OF PSYCHOLOGY

The University of Surrey is an ambitious, research-led organisation. We are committed to research excellence and to the application of our research for the benefit of society through ourenterprising and forward-thinking spirit. The School of Psychology has a long-standing reputation for its vibrant and supportive research and teaching environment. To build this further we are looking for the next high-quality and engaging Head of School, who will build on existing strengths to grow our reputation and reach. The School is about to begin a programme of refurbishment and expansion of its research laboratories and the future of Psychology at Surrey is founded on our investment in people and infrastructure.

The School has a strong track record of innovation in Psychology, from the discovery of the McGurk effect, to the first Centre for Environmental Psychology, the shaping of cross-European approaches to food labeling, changing educational approaches to national identity, and the ongoing development of mobile neuro-assessment. Being at the forefront of the development of research and of innovations, we are directly contributing to the wider Faculty themes of One-Health and the University cross-cutting themes of Innovation for Health and Lifelong Health and Wellbeing. Located within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, the School also benefits from close working relationships with colleagues across the Faculty and has access to our Simulation Suite, Surrey Sleep Research Centre with real world test-bed, Sports Research Institute and School of Veterinary Medicine.

The School is ranked 8th in the Guardian UK University Guide 2018 and 2nd in the Telegraph Top 10 list of Psychology degrees, reflecting its high-quality student experience. It was one of the founding UK providers of Clinical and Psychotherapeutic and Counselling Doctorates and its innovative Masters Programmes offer further study to Surrey’s high calibre Psychology graduates. The School currently houses 500+ UG students, 100+ Masters and 150+ taught Doctorate and PhD students and more than 70 staff. Over the past two years, the School has recruited more than 20 new academic staff from world-leading universities, with plans for further expansion in 2018/19. Strong connections with the BPS, business and NHS enrich the curriculum and make a significant contribution to the School’s applied research and the high rates of employment for Surrey’s Psychology graduates.

The Headship presents an opportunity for exceptional scholars with a strong commitment to driving forward research and fostering a learning community that is as collegial as it is innovative. You will have a track record of outstanding research in an area of Psychology that complements our existing specialisms, along with the academic standing and strategic vision to be a credible and inspirational leader. You will have evidence of delivering a first-class student experience and of mentoring others to do the same. In return, Surrey offers an exciting and forward-thinking academic environment coupled with an attractive remuneration package. The Headship is for five years in the first instance, after which point, the role holder will resume professorial duties.
