Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Organic Chemistry (SP3139-18-258)

You will teach and assess diverse aspects of chemistry, with an emphasis on synthetic organic chemistry. Qualified to PhD level in Chemistry and committed to educating students using a mixture of traditional and innovative teaching methods, you will be joining a vibrant and growing chemistry team where the majority of your teaching will be on our highly successful undergraduate chemistry degree programmes (accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry, and 100% satisfaction in NSS and Professional employment in DLHE in recent years). Some teaching at masters and foundation levels will also be required and you may be asked to contribute to programmes in other subject areas including Pharmacy and Biosciences.  Academic staff at Brighton support student learning through open, friendly, student-centred attitudes. 

Chemistry staff research ranges across the breadth of the subject with particular strengths in multidisciplinary collaborations underpinning biological and environmental applications.

You will be expected to establish a research programme at Brighton to enhance our existing work in the general area of organic chemistry.  Laboratory space will be provided as appropriate along with a start-up package and access to the School’s excellent research infrastructure. Collaborations with other academics within the University and the Brighton Sussex Medical School are encouraged.  The University has a variety of internal competitively awarded grants to support research and you will be provided with a research mentor to support your growth as a research-active academic. 

We have an aspiration that all permanent staff in the School will be qualified in higher education teaching at a level equivalent to Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.  Staff without formal teaching qualifications will be expected to complete the University’s postgraduate certificate in higher education teaching or apply for an HEA fellowship via the portfolio route (depending on their prior teaching experience). 

All staff participate in the administration of teaching and research within the School, for example through the leadership of modules and participation in committee work. The School will endeavour to keep your administrative load light in the first year to enable you to develop your teaching and research.
