Research Officer in Instrumentation (SM4071-18-129-R)

We seek a Research Officer to support the design and instrumentation of test rigs for teaching and research activities. This role would ideally suit an individual with a good honours degree in Engineering or Physics, with experience in designing electronics and software control tools for test rigs. Experience of working in a research environment, would be a significant advantage.

The candidate will be expected to be using a range of basic research methods to support research projects, including assisting with dissemination of results, and to:

be able to work independently as a scientist and work within a team to deliver project goalsbe responsible for the day-to-day management of a number of test rigs including undertaking safety checks, ensuring equipment is correctly maintained and calibratedwork with technicians to support the design, manufacture and commissioning of new test rigsexecute test programmes developed in collaboration with other researcher staff and studentsanalyse and interpret results of own research and generate original ideas based on outcomeswrite up results of own research and, working with other researchers, to contribute to the production of research reports and publications

The successful candidate will join the Advanced Engineering Centre (AEC), an internationally-recognised centre of research excellence with an established track record of pioneering research in applied thermofluids, including automotive engineering, heat transfer, sprays and two-phase flows. We work alongside global academics, industry leaders and policy makers to significantly impact the transportation, aerospace and medical sectors. The AEC has built a world-leading reputation for its research on advanced physical and mathematical models for fuel sprays, which have been validated by developing specialised optical and laser-based measurement techniques applied to state-of-the-art optical research engines. 

The AEC has built a 20-year partnership with Ricardo UK Ltd, culminating in the establishment of the Sir Harry Ricardo Laboratories in 2006 and in 2017, the joint creation of a new £14M building to host its research laboratories. The AEC was selected to host the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) Spoke for IC Engine Thermal Efficiency and has national and international recognition, evidenced by membership of a range of networks, including the APC, UK Fluids Network, UK Space Environments Association (UKSEA), Engine Combustion Network (ECN), European Automotive Research Partners Association (EARPA), UK Space Agency’s Space Projects Review Panel, and the UK’s Universities Internal Combustion Engine Group (UnICEG).
