Description :

The Faculty of Engineering and the Environment is offering an exciting opportunity for you to join one of the UK’s most dynamic University centres for engineering and environmental research and education.  Specifically, joining the well-established µ-VIS X-ray Imaging Centre (www.muvis.org), developing state-of-the-art methods for X-ray scanning of manufactured components.  The project is driven by real-world requirements, in close collaboration with major national and international partners. This position is initially funded by an EU grant, with a potential 6 month extension funded through a major aerospace company.

The initial phase of the project looks at the efficient use of x-ray tomography for dimensional metrology with main tasks including the simulation and collection of x-ray tomography data using fast, high throughput scan settings. This is followed by tomographic reconstruction with a set of different algorithmic approaches. Metrological uncertainty quantification will then allow the comparison of different combinations of scan settings and reconstruction approaches. The second part, if funded, will then look at the development and implementation of arbitrary X-ray scanning geometries within a custom specification Nikon µCT system, integrating Nikon system controls with a variety of 3rd party manipulators (hexapod, linear actuators and rotation stages).Acquired data is to be reconstructed using in-house tools (both back projection and iterative methods).Outputs are then to be analysed in terms of detectability of various engineering features and defects.  All aspects are supported by an experienced core team and several parallel projects.

A PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in engineering science is essential. Similarly, detailed understanding and knowledge of high resolution X-ray computed tomography and related 3D imaging modalities. The candidate must have experience in contemporary laboratory systems control, measurement and data/image acquisition software.

The University of Southampton is an institution in the top one per cent of world universities* and one of the UK’s top 15 research-intensive universities.  We have an international reputation for research, teaching and enterprise.

You will join a leading Engineering Faculty with an excellent record of collaborative research with industry and academic institutions in the UK and abroad.  In September 2013 an Athena SWAN Bronze award was received in recognition of our continued commitment to improving equality for women in science and engineering.

The Faculty offers exceptional research facilities in the areas of fluids, structures and their interactions, including a new world-class fluid dynamics facilities complex in the Boldrewood Engineering Campus, complete with a 138m towing tank.
