An opportunity now exists for a statistician to join a friendly team at the Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit (LEU) in Southampton (under the directorship of Professor Cyrus Cooper). The LEU aims to understand the environmental causes of diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis, and to develop strategies to prevent these disorders. The current research programmes are grouped into themes including (1) Lifecourse determinants of musculo-skeletal health, (2) Nutrition in early life and the risk of developing non-communicable chronic disease in adult life and (3) Work and health. Collaborative projects exist across these themes and also with a range of external collaborators. The post-holder would be expected to work mainly on theme 2, and in a programme of research focused on developing countries led by Professor Caroline Fall. He/she would need to be able to work overseas in India and other low- or middle-income countries for visits of up to 2-3 weeks, totalling about 6-8 weeks per year.

You should possess a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications (e.g. MSc in bio-statistics). You will be involved with the analysis of large and complex datasets using appropriate statistical techniques. Experience with SPSS, Stata or R would be essential. 

This is a full-time position for a period of 2 years on a fixed term basis, with the potential for extension. Salary will be in the range of £29,799 - £36,613 per annum dependent on qualifications and experience.
