Description :

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Surrey is seeking to recruit two members of academic staff. We seek to appoint highly qualified and collegiate individuals with a passion for teaching and research.

The Department offers highly praised undergraduate programmes with excellent employability prospects, together with a suite of popular MSc degrees in both contact and distance learning modes. Civil and Environmental Engineering formed part of a very successful REF 2014 return in General Engineering, with 80% world leading or internationally excellent outputs. Research is organised into thematic groups comprising Air Quality, Geomechanics, Infrastructure Systems Engineering, and Water and Environmental Engineering.

Applications are invited from candidates with a background in civil engineering and a research profile in geotechnics or structures. Our research in structures focuses on innovative design, maintenance and renewal of various infrastructure assets; e.g. corrosion damage assessment of cast iron pipes, residual fatigue life of riveted bridges, data analytics for structural health monitoring, adaptation/repair of highway structures and their foundations, multi-hazard fragility and resilience frameworks. Research in geotechnics includes liquefaction and dynamic soil-structure interaction of on/offshore structures, soil particle testing and characterisation, including inter-particle friction and contact modelling of irregular grains. We would particularly welcome applications from candidates with research interests in the areas of resilience and smart infrastructure and from those with industry/design experience.

Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant field and be able to demonstrate a strong publication record and involvement in initiating and submitting grant applications. Evidence of high quality teaching and design experience, as well as success in attracting funding are significant advantages. Chartered Engineer status is also desirable.

The successful applicant will contribute to teaching of Structures or Geotechnics at undergraduate level (including design orientated modules) and at MSc level in their specialist area, in addition to making a contribution to the wider Civil and Environmental Engineering taught programmes. S/he will be expected to join one of the research groups and undertake cutting edge research resulting in world leading outputs. Depending on experience and track record, appointment will be made at an appropriate point within the Lecturer or Senior Lecturer band.

The Department is committed to equality of opportunity and the promotion of diversity for the benefit of all.

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Abigail Bristow, Head of Department (Tel: +44 1483 682995, a.l.bristow@surrey.ac.uk).
