We invite applications for a faculty position in the Department of Physics of Utrecht University, to strengthen and broaden the research programme of the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric research (IMAU) in the area of Earth System Modelling, with applications in Atmospheric Dynamics. The position is co-funded by the Department of Physics and the Netherlands Earth System Science Centre (NESSC). The position intends to further enhance the use of Earth System Modelling with applications in Atmospheric Dynamics at IMAU and in NESSC, specifically using the Community Earth System Model (CESM). CESM support for this position consists of 1.0 FTE permanent general support, and 0.5 FTE dedicated support for the first five years.


The successful candidate will join the IMAU of the Department of Physics of Utrecht University and is expected to develop a research program on Earth System Modelling with applications in Atmospheric Dynamics, in collaboration with other existing research groups at IMAU (Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry, Coastal and Shelf Sea Dynamics, Ice and Climate, Oceans and Climate) and with researchers of NESSC (e.g. Paleoclimate Dynamics). The specific focus on Atmospheric Dynamics is required in view of maintaining a healthy balance in (future) IMAU research and teaching activities.

The candidate has a keen interest in Earth System Modelling with applications in Atmospheric Dynamics. S(he) has a talent for outreach and will actively contribute to NESSC and Utrecht University's strategic research theme Sustainability. A strong commitment to teaching is imperative. As a teacher, s(he) will play an active role in the Buys Ballot research school and the undergraduate and graduate education in Atmospheric Dynamics.
