Research Fellow in Electronic System Design (052218)

We seek a Research Fellow in Electronic System Design for Augmented Paper, beginning in September or October 2018 for 5 months (or the part-time equivalent). The Fellow will take a leading role in the design, fabrication and characterisation of low cost devices and techniques to be used in a of a light-based gesture recognition system for an Augmented Book, as part of the Next Generation Paperresearch project. The work will be carried out under the supervision of Dr Radu Sporea, flexible electronics expert and 2014 EPSRC Rising Star, at the Advanced Technology Institute and will involve the design and optimization of various aspects of the printed and hybrid electronics for the Augmented Book, including sensors, on- and off-page communication, power management, manufacturability and reliability and data processing using analog systems and microcontrollers.

The successful candidate will have a background in mixed-signal circuits, sensor system design, large area electronic circuits, or nanoelectronics, with a focus on hybrid integration and/or printed and flexible electronics fabrication. We welcome applications from candidates whose expertise may not entirely fit all technical requirements, but who can demonstrate creativity, determination and problem solving while working independently, as well as together in a multidisciplinary team. Furthermore, there is ample flexibility in the start date and work pattern, with a part-time contract as an option.

The Advanced Technology Institute (ATI) is a leading multidisciplinary research facility in the fields of nanotechnology, energy, and large area electronics. Labs equipped for conventional and emerging fabrication and characterisation of electronic devices and circuits will be available for the project. The project will run side by side with other major research activities in the areas of Quantum Technology, Spintronics, Energy Generation and Storage and Designer Nanomaterials. ATI research facilities include the recent Graphene Centre, and the joint Surrey - National Physical Laboratory labs in the areas of Microwave and RF characterisation, and Hyper-Terahertz Physics.

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£30,688) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate.  Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£31,604).
