The Nottingham Clinical Trials Unit (NCTU) is seeking to recruit high calibre researchers with a strong national reputation in clinical trials research. There are two posts available, funded as part of substantial investment by the University of Nottingham and the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust in the NCTU and the Nottingham-NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). The posts offer an exciting opportunity for the successful candidates to play a key role in strategic development of the unit, and to make a substantial contribution to establishing the NCTU and Nottingham as an international centre of excellence in clinical trials and translational research.

The unit’s mission is to conduct high quality, high impact multicentre trials to improve health and well-being. NCTU is based in the School of Medicine at the University of Nottingham, and has close links with local NHS Trusts (Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust, Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, and Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) the Institute of Mental Health and the School of Health Sciences. The unit is a UK Clinical Research Collaboration registered Clinical Trials Unit (http://www.ukcrc-ctu.org.uk).

NCTU has a broad portfolio of trials including studies evaluating medical devices, CTIMPs and complex interventions. Particular strengths currently are trials of dermatology, obstetrics, gastroenterology, respiratory medicine, stroke, mental health, surgery (particularly hand surgery), emergency trials, and genitourinary medicine. Other research includes methodological studies to improve the efficiency and quality of trial conduct, and systematic reviews and meta-analysis. 

The Nottingham-NIHR BRC (Director Professor Ian Hall) opened in April 2017, and brings a step-change in the breadth and depth of early translational research in five specific themes: gastrointestinal and liver disorders; hearing loss; musculoskeletal diseases; respiratory medicine; mental health technology. A key strategic objective of the Centre is to improve the quality and quantity of internationally recognised early translational research (phase 0 to 2) in these areas. Imaging is a cross-cutting theme within the Centre, which offers opportunities to develop innovative trial designs.

There are two positions available and they will be offered on a permanent contract. Hours of work are full time, 36.25 per week or part time, minimum 29 hours per week.
